Bhongir is a small rock fort perched on a massive dome of granite in A.P.State, India.

In medieval times a strategically located fort could easily dominate the surrounding countryside. Firearms and cannon were still in the future, sometime in the 10th century, when a huge dome of massive granite rock with sheer sides was made into a fortress. The rock of Bhongir juts out of the landscape some 50 km from Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh state in India.

Way back in the 10th century the area was well forested on all sides. The ancient Buddhist trade route across the peninsula passed by Bhongir rock.

A king named Tribhuvana Chalukya built the fort of Bhuvana giri (Bhuvana's hill ) on the rock in the 11th century a.d. This became Bhongir. He built a stone wall which is still standing, and laid steps through heavy archways and gates right to the top. A deep gash in the rock was dammed up at several places, thus creating a series of reservoirs collecting rain water. Lotuses still grow in the pools today.

Crumbling stucco ruins of a later age still stand, while old Kannada and Telugu inscriptions vividly bring to light the daily life of the people of long ago. (Mostly bureaucratic stuff, extremely familiar to Indians today too).

The Chalukya style of sculpture is distinctive, and was further refined by their successors, the Kakatiyas. At Bhongir they have left some stray relief sculptures and inscriptions.

By the 15th century, cannons reduced the strategic importance of massive rock forts like Bhongir. It was ceded to the Bahmani sultans. Gradually it became the seat of a local governor, then a prison for pretenders to the Qutb Shahi sultan's throne. By the 18th century it was merely an interesting curiosity-- the British did not pay much attention to it. After a brief interlude of a bitter communist rebellion in the late 1940's, which destroyed the nizam's archaic state, Bhongir went back to sleep.

Now only a couple of microwave dishes adorn the top, next to a ruined mansion. The massive stairways of stone are still standing, as are the well made walls, bastions and turrets. The earlier turrets are designed for spears and arrows and the later ones for muzzle loading guns. Students climb all the way up here to study because the breeze is very refreshing. But from the flat plain, the rock of Bhongir stands grey, menacing and silent, looming over the line of trains and traffic snaking past, 300 feet below.

From the city of Hyderabad to Bhongir the soil and surroundings seem similar, but after Bhongir towards Warangal there is a slight change in the vegetation and soil. The area around Bhongir is rich in historical sights and interesting spots but is almost unknown.

(Written by V Rama Chandra Rao)

Found another post on the fort:

“Sometimes, there are places that are relative unknowns that are just as awesome and breathtaking as those that get plastered all over the news and tourist sites. That is why when someone goes on a vacation to some foreign place, an itinerary set by a travel agency or tourist company isn’t always the best choice. There is still much to be said about discovering less well-known attractions in out-of-the-way places; it harkens back to the time when there was magic in discovering something that is relatively low profiled. Case in point: Bhongir Fort in the municipality of Bhongir, in Hyderabad.

The fort is built upon a single rocky hill in Bhongir, a town in Andhra Pradesh, located in the Nalgonda district of the state. It is located some 48 kilometers away from Hyderabad. The Western Chalukya ruler, Tri-bhuvana-malla Vikram-aditya VI, built the fort from one single monolithic rock in the 12th century; as a result, the fort was originally named Tribhuvanagiri, after him. Gradually, across the centuries, the name metamorphosed into Bhuvanagiri (or Bhuvana’s Hill), and eventually, into Bhongir, its present name. The hill upon which the fort itself is built is about 500 feet high, and spread to about 40 acres of land.

Considered practically impregnable by invading armies then, the fort has a unique egg-shaped construction with two entry points that are protected by huge rocks. A moat encircles the fort and the place itself has a huge underground chamber, an armory, stables, and trap doors, among others. These can still be seen even now, which makes for some fascinating viewing for visitors. The citadel located on the top of the hill gives a wonderful bird’s-eye view of the surrounding area. According to legend, Bhongir Fort once had an underground passage that leads directly to Golconda Fort. It finally went to the Bahmani Sultans who tried to renovate it, and thus, gave it an Islamic style. It became a seat to the local governor, and a prison for Qutub Shahi throne pretenders. By the 18th century, the fort has fallen into decay, and until recently, it had just remained a silent fortification ruin, covered in its long but mysterious past.”

________________________________________________________________________

Other posts on this fort:

http://shonawrites.blogspot.com/2010/05/baap-of-ivs-bhongir-part-2.html

http://www.flickr.com/photos/hirsuteursus/2195632760/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:A_view_of_Bhongir_Fort,_AP_W_IMG_3052.jpg

http://www.mustseeindia.com/Bhongir

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travelogues/60805-bhongir-fort-photologue.html

http://www.baatasaari.com/english/city-guides/bhongir.aspx

http://www.simplytelangana.com/2010/11/13/bhongir-fort/

News Cafe

News Cafe, InOrbit Mall, Hyderabad - one of the best restaurants in Hyderabad. It has both indoor and outdoor seating, but I loved the outdoor seating area, it was too good, with a splendid view of a lake near the mall and a beautiful view of the city. It is 15 km east of Hindupur and about 120 km north of Bangalore. From Bangalore, it can be reached by going west at Kodikonda checkpost on Hyderabad highway NH7. Alternatively, one could take a bus or a train to Hindupur and then travel to Lepakshi. Lepakshi is very important historically and archaeologically. There are three shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Virabhadra. The famous Veerabhadra temple, dedicated to Veerabhadra, is located here. Built by the brothers Viranna and Virupanna, the temple is a notable example of the Vijayanagar architectural style. It is famous for its sculptures, which were created by the artisans of Vijayanagara empire. A huge Nandi bull made out of a single granite stone is one of the attractions in Lepakshi. The place is renowned for being one of the best repository of mural paintings (see below) of the Vijayanagar Kings. Many old Kannada inscriptions dating back centuries can be seen on its walls Legend has it that the Naga of the Nagalinga was carved out of a single stone by sculptors while they waited for their mother to prepare lunch.

Temples of Lepakshi
There are three temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Virabhadra. On a hillock known as Kurma Saila (tortoise shaped hill), temples of 'Papanatheswara', 'Raghunatha', 'Srirama', 'Veerabhadra' and 'Durga' are located. Veerabharadra temple is the most important temple. Lepakshi is an ultimate testimony for Vishwakarma Brahmins who sculpted these temples. It is believed that noted Vishwakarma Amarashilpi Jakkanachari took part in the planning the architecture of these temples. There are many shila shasanas that the famous sculptors like Dakoju, Maroju took part in this temple sculpture. Veerabhadra temple is a notable example of the Vijayanagar style of architecture. A reference is made in the 'Skandapurana' to Lepakshi as one of the hundred and eight important 'Shaiva Kshetras' (shrines). Though the temple of Veerabhadra is claimed to have been constructed by Saint 'Agastya' himself, it was developed into the present exquisite shrine by 'Virupanna', the treasurer of the Vijayanagar Kings. He conceived the idea as he found the image of Veerabhadra. He executed the plan in the absence of the king and used the treasure when he was away at Vijayanagar. When the construction was almost finished and it was being supervised the king returned and found the treasure empty. The king ordered, as a punishment to this heinous crime, that he should be blinded. The treasurer being a loyal person carried out the punishment spot with his own bands. Even today one can see two dark stains upon the wall near the 'Kalyana Mandapa', which are said to be the marks made by his eyes, which he himself dashed against the wall. The builder did not survive for a long time and the village is called "Lepa-akshi Lepakshi", i.e., a village of the blinded eye. The temple is divided into three parts - the 'Mukha Mandapa', (also called 'Nitya Mandapa' or 'Ranga Mandapa'), the 'Artha Mandapa' and 'Garbha Griha', and the 'Kalyana Mandapa', with 38 carved monolithic pillars in grey sandstone is unfinished. These three form a triangle with a common Mandapam. As per local legend Lord Shiva and Parvati were married on the spot where the Kalyana Mandapa stands. The temple is surrounded on all sides by an outer enclosure. A second inner enclosure contains the main portion of the temple. Its finest parts are the 'Natya' (Dancing) and 'Ardha' (worship) Mandapas. The former is decorated with superbly sculptured pillars on, which are carved life-size representations of musicians and dancers in various poses displaying spirit and vigour. The Kalyana Mandapam is a standing monument to the exuberance of Vijayanagar art but it is left unfinished. The best specimens of the Vijayanagar style of sculpture and mural paintings are found in the Natya and Kalyana Mandapams (dance and wedding halls). These sculptures depict puranic episodes like those of 'Ananthasayana', 'Dattatreya', 'Chaturmukha Bramha', 'Tumburu', 'Narada' and 'Rambha'.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5423896462954797250" style="DISPLAY: block; Till date one can find those blood scars on that particular wall.

Sources: Anantapur.com, Wikipedia.com, Kaladarshana.com

Vishwashanti Ashram

The Ashram is located around 25 kms from Bangalore (Bengaluru) on Tumkur Road, Vishwa Shanti Nagar, near Nelamangala Town. This spot is still a well kept secret as far as tourists are concerned. Vishwashanti Ashram houses the tallest statue of Vitthala, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Vishwa Shanthi Ashram was established by Sant Sadguru Keshavdas in 1982, with the objective of promoting world peace and also to spread the teachings of the Gita and Bhakthi Yoga. The Ashram is well landscaped and cleanly maintained. You can also find the tallest statue of Vijaya Vittala (36 feet), an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and also Gayathri Devi. Another attraction here is the Bhagavad Gita Mandir, where all the verses of Bhagavad Gita are carved on the walls. In front of this Mandir is a beautifully sculpted form of the chariot driven by Lord Krishna. There are numerous other shrines dedicated to other Gods and Goddesses within the campus. During festivals, it serves free food and Prasadams to numerous devotees that come to this spiritual destination.

Sources: Web.mac.com and Godakshin.com

Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak is the highest peak in Wayanad, at 2100m above sea level. It is a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 300 meters. Meenmutty Falls, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in the Wayanad District, is a 2 km hike though the jungle from the main Ooty Road. It is Kerala's second largest waterfall and the one most unspoiled in its natural setting. Each of its three tiers requires a separate hike through a moist, deciduous forest. The path is quiet dangerous and tiresome but the waterfalls is worth it.

Meenmutty waterfalls is secluded, not easily accessible, this is a wonderful waterfalls, far away from the tourist rush.

Sources: Trekwiki.wetpaint.com & Keralam4u.blogspot.com

Muthyalamaduvu

Muthyalamaduvu is a picnic spot near Anekal, 40 km from Bangalore, Karnataka, India.

In the local Kannada language, Muthyalamaduvu means 'pearl valley' (muthu = pearl and maduvu = valley), apparently named for its 92 meter waterfall, whose falling water appears to look like drops of pearl.

The source of the water is the nearby Onakanahalli Tank. There are quite a few resorts to chose from nearby and there is a KSTDC run restaurant. Due to its verdant foliage, Muthyalamaduvu is popular among urbanites as a weekend retreat.

Muthyalamaduvu is an hour’s drive from Bangalore. The road from Bangalore to Anekal is quite good but after the right turn at Anekal for Muthyalamaduvu, don't expect good roads (Or don't expect roads :-)).

The entire stretch from Bangalore (after Bannerghatta National Park) is very scenic and beautiful. Don't expect to find any food or accommodations, but you may find some one selling beer and soft drinks.

August to November (Rainy Season) is the right time to enjoy this pearl-fully beautiful place.

There are two routes to reach Pearl Valley -
1. Take Bannerghatta Road and reach Bannerghatta National Park. Continue beyond and reach Anekal. Take a right turn at Anekal and after about 15 minutes drive you will reach the spot. (Distance : 40 Kms)
2. Take Hosur Road, continue beyond Electronic City and reach Attibele. Take a right turn and reach Anekal. Again, take a right turn at Anekal and after about 15 minutes drive you will reach the spot. (Distance : 45 Kms)

Route sketch:

Route 1: Bangalore—>Banneraghatta Road—>Banneraghatta National Park—>Anekal—>Muthyala Maduvu

Route 2: Bangalore—>Hosur Road—>Chandapura—>Anekal—>Muthyala Maduvu

It is better to take the second route as it is a highway with less traffic compared to the weekend traffic on Bannerghatta Road and to take the first route while returning.

Overlooking Muthyalamaduvu waterfalls is a small shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, adding a religious touch to the place. The hilltop KSTDC restaurant serves as a watering hole for thirsty and hungry travellers.

If you are staying in Bangalore and just want to chill out, Muthyala Maduvu is a nice place to visit. Couple of tips:

1. If you are looking for a big waterfall then, I seriously suggest you don’t visit, as you will return disappointed because it is less of a waterfall and more of a picnic spot.
2. Try not to visit on a dry season. There is a very less chance that the stream will be present.

Sources:Wikipedia, Travelpod.com, AdmirableIndia.com, Mustseeindia.com & Traverge.com

Big banyan tree (Dodda aalad mara) & Mukthi Naga temple at Ramohalli

Mukthi Naga Temple

Big banyan tree

The famous big banyan tree at Ramohalli, which is a stone’s throw away from Bangalore could be the ideal spot to unwind, away from the City’s hustle and bustle. A mere 25 kms from the City, you can reach the spot either from Kumbalgod on Mysore Road or from Chennenahalli on Magadi Road. As you near the place, the wide canopy of the tree comes into view. There are a few shops, hotels including Hotel Mayura belonging to the KSTDC that come to view as one drives into the place.

This banyan tree (Ficus Benghalensis), is a 400-year-old tree that seems to have reached the end of its life span. This big banyan tree is spread over 3 acres. This tree was also picturised in the super-hit Hindi movie Sholay along with Ramanagaram hills. After the world’s biggest banyan tree at Thimmamma Marimanu near Gooty in Andhra Pradesh, the banyan tree at Botanical Gardens of Kolkata and Adyar tree at Chennai, this is the fourth largest banyan tree in India. As is typical to this species, the main tree has over the years spread out widely with several aerial roots or prop roots. With thousands of such roots spread out, the tree covers an area of three acres. The entire tree is fenced and one can walk alongside the labyrinth of roots, which create a cool, shady environment. It is believed that the tree is symbolic of the trinity with the roots representing Brahma, the stems and the bark representing Vishnu and the branches symbolising Maheshwara. There is also a Shiva temple in the enclosure.

The big banyan tree has been a popular jaunt for quite some time and is a favorite site for several film shootings. However it is pathetic to note that almost every branch and trunk of the tree has been etched with graffiti by vandals. The ageing of the tree has also necessitated some support to the branches and people are advised not to get too close to them. Vandals have carved graffiti on this age old tree and it is disheartening to see such a wonder being destroyed. Take care not to litter the place and carve on the trunk or the branches. You could however enjoy the shade of this tree and take photographs.

Near to Ramohalli is the Mukthi Naga temple. In this temple, you can find a giant idol of the 7 headed Nagadevatha, who is actually Lord Subramanaya in the Naga form, said to be one of the biggest in the world. Mukthi Naaga statue is 12 feet tall, 36 tonne weight is the largest Naga statue. Mukthi Naaga temple is known for its “Naga Dosha Nivarane” powers. Though the temple is new one, the legend behind the temple is more than 250years old. The legend is that devotees making 9 pradakshinas around the "hutta" (anthill) where the serpent resides will have their wishes fulfilled within 90 days. Devotees are asked first to do this pradakshinas, then visit the Siddhi Vinayaka temple and then only offer prayers at the Mukthi Naga temple. A small office is open to book puja tickets, buy prasadams and Cassettes/VCDs. Temple is now being expanded into Mukthi Naaga Temple complex which will have 125 feet Mahadwara/Rajagopura, Navagraha temples, Kshetra Palaka Temple, Patladamma temple, Aadimukthi Naaga Temple, 1008 Nagabana, Annapurna Meals hall, Chikka Palani, Go Shala, Dharmadarshi Bhavan and Dharmadarshi house. After the darshan at the temple we were on our way back home.

Nearby is the picturesque Manchanabele reservoir surrounded by hills which can also be visited on the way to Magadi Road. Ramohalli is a quick getaway from the City and can be covered as a day trip.

TRAVEL TIPS

How to reach: Dodda Alada Mara is located 28 Kms from Bangalore on the Bangalore - Mysore Road. Drive on Mysore Road beyond Kengeri, take a deviation to the right at Kumbalagod junction and proceed for seven kms. If approaching from Magadi Road, turn left at a spot with a clear indication between Tavarekere and Chennenahalli, and continue for about 6kms. Many buses reach the place from the City.

Food and water: Available

Suggestion: Watch out for monkeys and take care to leave the place clean.

One more thing: There are many farms here growing saplings of variety of flowers. You can get a few of them. They are quality one's for good price! You can try them.

Sources: http://www.indiamike.com/, http://www.wikimapia.org/, http://www.raveeshkumar.com/, http://www.ashwinis-travel-tales.blogspot.com/ & http://www.godakshin.com/

Yelagiri Hills (Elagiri Hills) - Getaway from the city madness

Yelagiri Hills is for easy-paced, relaxed weekends; an ideal getaway from the hustle, bustle and madness of the city. No Internet, no mobile phones and no deadlines. Just relax! Put your feet up; catch up on some reading in this quiet environment, where the only sound you'll hear is the chirping of birds. You are the master of all that you survey. At Yelagiri, you can do just about anything you want. For instance, you could trek up those rugged hillocks or go on long walks through narrow roads, explore the green surroundings of this rural retreat. Or perhaps you'd like to head towards the lake nearby for some leisure boating or just squat on a bench in the adjoining children's park and watch the kids play away to glory. Yelagiri Hills encompasses a total area of just 30 sq kms and an altitude of approximately 3500 feet. Therefore, the climate is rather moderate, and an evening breeze that can get a bit chilly (especially after a few showers), considering that the hills have a fair amount of forest cover. An advantage is that Yelagiri Hills isn't infested by touristy-types, who prefer hill stations with swanky shopping malls, plush restaurants and stuff like that. It's peaceful and quiet out here in these remote surroundings. Chances of bumping into your neighbour are perhaps one in a million. What makes Yelagiri Hills an ideal weekend getaway is it's proximity from Bangalore or Chennai; just about 3-4 hours. So, an early morning start can get you to Yelagiri by about 10 in the morning and if you leave the next day just after lunch, your home by nightfall. The main town of Yelagiri Hills is called Athanur - the nerve-centre of sorts - which is just one long, winding road through the hills, pocketed by isolated villages and thatched dwellings on either side. This is in fact, agriculture country. The tribal who live around these parts make their livelihood from the proceeds of agricultural products such as jackfruit and honey. Tourism is a far cry presently; but there is evidence that Yelagiri Hills is getting popular. There's a flip-side too. So long as commercialization doesn't happen, Yelagiri Hills will remain a serene retreat for weekend getaways. Useful Tip Credit cards are not accepted anywhere at Yelagiri; by and large most hotels/ lodging places expect payment by cash only or a Demand Draft for advance bookings. Check the mode of payment at the place you stay when you book or before you check-in. Since there are no ATMs out there, better to carry cash. Where to go? How much can one do in just one weekend? Fortunately, Yelagiri Hills isn't a sprawling hill station, bursting at its seams like the Ooty's and the Kodai's of down-South.

Punganoor Artificial Lake-cum-Park
Perhaps the most popular landmark of Yelagiri Hills is the lake. Ask anyone, and they'll tell you where it's located. For want of anything else to do, most visitors to the Hills tend to take the short walk from their lodgings and perhaps, go on a boat ride. The park adjoins the lake and is an ideal outing for kids to play around. Picnicking isn't allowed inside the premises. Also, there's an entry fee to be paid to enter the lake and park. Worth it, simply because it helps pass time and kids can have fun too.

Jalagamparai Waterfalls
The River Attaaru, runs through the valleys of Yelagiri Hills, and at the village of Jadaiyanoor, flows over to form the waterfall. It's perhaps the only distant spot from the main town (over 30 kilometres) and fairly frequented by visitors to the Hills. Larger groups picnic out here, but because of its isolation don't expect too many facilities. Jalagamparai Waterfalls is also an ideal place to go on a day long trek and if you do decide to go there, just make sure you're well-stocked with water and food.

A word of caution: The waterfalls are dependent on the river being full and the river is dependent on substantial rainfall. Yelagiri Hills hasn't any monsoon season of its own; rainfall here is mainly a 'spill-over' of rainfall in nearby Bangalore or Chennai regions. Unless there is rain here, Yelagiri Hills can largely be dry.

Swamimalai
Possibly the highest peak around and the best place to go on a lovely trek is Swamimalai. It's an easy trek along a muddy path starting from the eastern side of the lake, which is about 3 kilometres long and pretty scenic too. Most visitors to Yelagiri Hills, who have trekking in mind, often climb up Swamimalai. Make sure you have enough water and light snacks before you set-off up the hillock.

Murugan Koil
If perchance the need arises to seek divine intervention drop by at the Murugan temple to offer prayers and invoke blessings from the deity. For whatever its worth, a trip or even a trek to the holy spot is bound to invigorate energy, health and peace of mind.

Telescope House
You come across this when you're driving up the Hills. It's supposed to be open on weekends, but one has always seen a huge padlock at all times. They say there's a telescope housed inside and from where one can get a good view of places in the distance. But from the naked-eye one can easily get a view of Thirupathur Town or Jolarpet down below; no need for telescopes, really. Besides, it's a waste of time and petrol to drive 2 kilometers to find a padlock at the gates.

Summer Festival
May and June each year is the time for a Summer festival at Yelagiri Hills. Main attendees are local village folk and like-minded people from nearby areas of Vellore District. The government-sponsored event aims to showcase the customs, culture and traditions of the tribal belonging to the areas that fall under Yelagiri Hills. Invitees include state ministers, government officials, members of various panchayat unions and local headmen. What actually happens is that there are a lot of cultural programmes, music blaring out of loud speakers all across town and a general destruction of peace and quiet. Many welfare measures are announced amidst all the merry-making, but like its every where else, nothings ever achieved.

Useful Tip
If you are driving over to Yelagiri, make sure you have enough petrol/diesel in your vehicle. There aren't any petrol bunks uphill and though some shops do sell petrol in 'loose' better not to chance it because it could be adulterated. Besides, the cost per litre is atrociously high.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5379798548590915234" style="DISPLAY: block; Despite all the noise made by the Tamilnadu Government to popularize the Hills as a holiday spot, if Yelagiri Hills has had some semblance of success, it's due to the efforts of private parties and certainly not any government. There must be around 20-30 places offering accommodation. Many call themselves 'resorts' but in actual fact, the accommodation and facilities on offer are abysmal. Hygiene, cleanliness of lodgings and food leave a lot to be desired. Having said that, there are a few hotels and lodging houses who understand what hospitality means.

You may like to check out the following places:

-Landmark Hotel
-Hotel Hills
-Yelagiri Hills Country Club
Hotel Yelagiri (First Hotel in Yelagiri Hills)
-VSK Boarding and Lodging
-Hotel 'O' Nila
-Ammu Anju Cottage and Hotel Archana
-Ashok Lodge
-Siddharth Holiday Resorts
-Hotel Nigress Boarding and Lodging (Deluxe)
-Taj Gardens - An Exclusive Resort

Useful Tip
Though drinking is allowed, there aren't any liquor shops or bars at Yelagiri. Even hotels don't stock liquor because they aren't licensed to. Some sell liquor on the sly but you never know if the stuff is genuine. Besides, the price can be atrociously high. You could one of two things; Option 1: Pick-up your 'stuff' at the liquor shop that's at the junction off the main road, before you start to drive uphill. Option 2: Bring your own 'fire water'. The second option is strongly recommended.

How to get there?
From Bangalore, get on to Hosur Road (NH7) and head towards Krishnagiri. The 4-lane National Highway is excellent and you should make it in less than 2 hours (crazy driving will get you elsewhere). At Krishnagiri, there's a toll-gate manned by the National Highways Authority. Pay your toll and at the second flyover (don't go over the flyover), take the service road towards the left. This road goes to Chennai. Take the left and for the next hour or so (approx. 50 kilometers), drive on NH46. You'll come to another toll-station. Pay and drive for a few minutes till you see Vanni Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Further up you'll see a sign 'Elagiri' (36 kms) indicated by a 'U' turn arrow (careful not to miss this sign) and that you need to keep left, take the 'U' turn, go under the bridge and on to the road towards Thirupathur. That's the road you need to get on to. Drive for about 7 kilometers (you'll see the winding road that leads up to the hills to your left). On the left, you'll see a big sign board 'Tamilnadu Tourism Department Welcomes You'. Turn left at this junction, there's a sign board pointing towards Yelagiri.

Fourteen hairpin bends and about half hour or so of driving uphill, you are in Athanur town. Hotel Hills is on the right side of that same main road (after the Yelagiri Hills police Station). You just can't miss it. Take extreme caution while driving on the 4-lane expressways. It's not uncommon to see cyclists, two-wheelers or even cars and other vehicles coming towards you on the wrong side of the road. Yelagiri Hills is also accessible by train. Many trains stop at Jolarpet and from there, one could hire a cab to reach Yelagiri. The ideal thing to do is arrange for pick-up transportation with Hotel Hills. They charge Rs. 80-100 per head one way and that's a lot better than breaking your head haggling with the cabbie. Frequent buses come and go from Thirupathur and Jolarpet at the foothills. You can get buses from Chennai, Salem, Hosur, Bangalore but a bus journey will eat into a major part of your day. Driving or taking the train is advisable.

Useful Tips
Like in many hill-stations, you'll come across an army of monkeys on the winding, ghat road. Pull aside to take pictures if you like, or slow down so that the kids can get a closer look at these lovely animals. But, don't get too close and don't provoke them, because they can get very, very nasty. Ensure (a) the windows are rolled up; and (b) ensure no food items are on the dash board, especially bananas. If they see a banana, you'll have a battle on your hands. Remember, out there you are pretty much out-numbered. It might also be interesting for you to know that a monkey bite can be pretty much fatal. Whatever level of adventurous streak you have in you, don't overdo it by trying to crawl through bushes or thick shrubs. Yelagiri Hills is home to hundreds of snakes and some pretty venomous ones at that. There are plenty of hotels (many which call themselves as resorts) in Yelagiri. Tariffs start from about Rs 400 and goes upto Rs 4000 for cottages. Book at least a week in advance. The hotels get crowded during weekend and holidays.

Duration: 1 - 2 days
Approximate budget/person: Rs 1000 - Rs 2000
How to reach: By cars, taxis, buses, bikes or train (until Jolarpettai or Tirupattur)
Road condition: Good

Sources: http://www.yelagirihills.com/, http://www.godakshin.com/ Resturant

A trekker's delight just 55 km out of the city must be a welcome break for those rearing to try some adventure during the weekend. Nijagal Betta provides the right setting for such an outing. NijaGallu literally translates to Truth Rocks (I have no idea why this name!). Known to a handful few, Nijagallu is a mostly unexplored hillock and a getaway spot out of Bangalore.

Located a few hundred meters from the Bangalore-Tumkur highway, Nijagal Betta is a hillock of ruined temples, forts, caves and striking rock formations. However, much of all this, save for a portion of the fort wall, is not visible from the road. It's believed that Hyder Ali and Peshwa Madhav Rao fought a war here.

Path to take:

Though the hill is accessible from Hale Nijagal, a nearby village, the approach if much easier is from the highway if one uses a vehicle. Incidentally, some enterprising youths conduct a rural tour in the picturesque Hale Nijagal village. In case you want a short trek, you can drive unto the Dobbespet flyover and then take the road by the left side of the flyover, drive a short distance and then turn to the left if you are approaching from Bangalore.

Route from Tumkur/Bangalore: On Tumkur Road, approximately 55 km from Bangalore after Dobbspet are a set of two petrol bunks on the right. Nijagal Betta is right opposite these two. If you are coming from Tumkur side, then drive unto the flyover and take the flank road underneath and then turn right going under the flyover and then take a right turn again. Soon take a left turn drive straight until you reach the foot hills of the Betta. Make enquiries in case you feel lost. If you wish to enjoy a long trek, and then park your vehicle somewhere near the flyover and then start walking in the same route described above or walk through Hale Nijagal Village.

The climb:

The climb is tough initially because of the loose gravel. But the path becomes rocky as you climb, thus giving a better foothold. Halfway up the hill, the two outer layers of the fort come into view. The fort is believed to have been built by Chikkadevaraya Wodeyar in the mid-17th century.

Once the first outer wall is crossed, it's easier to navigate the path. It's a little tricky towards the end as the path hugs a large boulder and only a flimsy rail provides some much needed support.

This path finally leads to a set of adjacent caves that nestle a small Sri Siddeshwara (Shiva shrine) and Dargah, which are popular among local villagers. The final part of the hill rises above these shrines. It's a steep outcrop, but rough hewn steps provide enough grips leading to a set of rock-cut shelters and caves. You may find some monkeys keeping you company at the top of the Betta. Just opposite to the Dargah, you can climb further up the hills, unto the summit.

The peak provides an unobstructed view of the countryside, the snaking NH4, neighbouring hills and even Shivagange Hills. The trek is fairly easy and it takes about 90 minutes to two hours to reach the top at leisure.

There are plenty of abandoned structures worth exploring. The path has many sculptors from the Hoysala period and also has rock etchings that appear to be pre-historic, but this hasn't been authenticated.

It's suitable for the whole family, though you can camp at the foot of the hills and have a picnic lunch. During my trip there, my 4 year old niece was able to tread the hills easily, though it doesn't look inviting to all.

How to reach Nijagal Betta:

Nijagal Betta is situated on Tumkur Road; approximately 55 Km from Bangalore after Dobbspet are a set of two petrol bunks on the right. Nijagal Betta is right opposite these two.

Transport: Buses are available to Dobbaspet; Hire local transport to the foot of the hill. Or you can go for a long ride on bullet.

Other details:
Nijagal Betta is not popular; it’s got a Dargha on top with a temple in ruins at the base and a twin-kalyani. Nice place for photographing birds, monkeys, insects and reptiles. The climb to the top was not tiring at all. The peak had flat land and seems like a natural stone maze. There are 3 stone enclosures that look like a pre-historic temple shelter & temple ruins. On the way up is the Dharga. On the way back there is a cave. It’s cold and dark inside with limited access and a lot of beehives can be found clinging dangerously to the rock surfaces over the cave entrance. The view of the NH7 from the peak is excellent; a railway track runs parallel to the road. There is A1 Plaza Restaurant (Affiliated to Reliance Petrol Pump) adjacent to Nijagal Betta. Nijagal Betta is 65 km from Bangalore city. To reach there take the NICE Road [Nandi Infrastructure Corridor]. Get on to the Tumkur Road and soon after Dobespet, look for Reliance Petrol pump on the right hand side of the Road. The hillock on the Left side facing is Nijagal Betta. To get to the peak you can take your bikes under the railway pass and can park bikes adjacent to the path leading to the peak.

Travel Tips:

Do wear proper shoes and clothing as fine gravel makes the ground slippery. Narrow paths towards the end are thick with thorny bramble. Beware of slippery side of the rocky outcrop as you climb. Carry snacks, water and soft drinks if you wish to enjoy a leisurely chat at the foot hills. You can have breakfast at one of the local restaurants on Tumkur road within city limits.

Things To Be Aware Of:
1. Fine gravel makes the ground slippery.
2. Narrow paths towards the end are thick with thorny bramble.

P.S: Places close to Nijagallu include the imposing Sivagange Hills or the scenic DevarayanaDurga Hills.

Sources: http://www.godakshin.com/ and http://www.trekforlife.blogspot.com/
